Benefits of Handmade Natural Soap

Retail bought soap (a.k.a. cleanser or beauty bar) are made from a cocktail of chemicals and harsh detergents that could leave skin irritated, overly cleansed and dry. Some chemicals could even cause cancer, such as triclosan. Natural handmade soap on the other hand helps relieve irritated skin and could improve eczema, psoriasis and other skin problems.

As a continuation of our previous blog post titled “Where to Buy Handmade Soap”, we are going to talk about the benefits of handmade or homemade natural soap today. What is wrong with the usual commercial soap that you can purchase at retails outlets? Why should we be concerned with what we use to cleanse our body, hair and face?

If you are still reading this post or found this post online, you may already be using a homemade or handmade natural soap or are wondering what are the benefits of using a real handmade soap in place of commercial soap.

If you are new to the concept of real soap made with lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide), then read on and reap the benefit of a healthier life by using a natural handmade soap today.

Handmade Soap vs Commercial Cleaner

Handmade soap or homemade soap are made thru introduction of lye (sodium hydroxide and / or potassium hydroxide) in fatty acids like vegetable oil.

Before we look into the benefits of handmade lye soap, lets understand what is soap and what are the difference between a handmade lye soap vs a commercial cleaner or beauty bar.

Soap by definition is a cleansing and emulsifying agent made usually by action of alkali on fat or fatty acids and consisting essentially of sodium or potassium salts of such acids.

Commercial beauty bars that you find in retail stores are not real soap as they are not made thru the action of alkali on fat i.e. saponification. Only a real soap made from lye and oil can be called soap.

Commercial beauty bars, cleaners or shampoo are made with surfactants or chemical detergents. Simply look at the ingredient behind your “soap”, you would likely see SLS or SLES.

That’s an acronym for Sodium Laureth Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Esther Sulfate which is essentially a harsh synthetic detergent and foaming agent that corrodes in order to clean and create lather.

Like many other detergents, SLES and SLS are a skin irritant and is possibly carcinogenic to human.

So why don’t “soap” factory make soap in the right way? Well, the simple answer is the cost and ease of production. Chemicals are cheap i.e. profits are higher and much easier to produce.

Real soap made with vegetable oils are more expensive to produce and the end product soap, like all organic life, can vary in color, weight and texture even when the same ingredients are used.

Ever wondered how 5 litres of “hand soap” or “dishwashing soap” can be sold at less than $10? Want to know how simple it is to make commercial soap with chemicals like SLES and SLS at dirt cheap cost? Watch this video below.

Benefits of Handmade Soap

Are you thinking, “Alright alright.. I get it. Commercial soap are made from harsh detergent and real soap are not… So?”. I’m glad you asked.

Unlike detergent filled commercial cleansers, real handmade soap are made from skin conditioning vegetable oils such as olive oil and are much kinder on skin as compared to a detergent bar.

Soap makers can either use cold or hot process method to make soap. Thru saponification (mixing lye into botanical oils) the result is real soap with naturally occurring residual glycerine (a humectant great for moisturizing and softening our skin) still present in the soap at the end.

A lot of commercial soaps are very drying to the skin as all the glycerine – a naturally occurring by-product – is removed. Glycerine has many uses in the cosmetics industry so manufacturers can make extra profit by selling the glycerine separately.

Where to Buy Handmade Soap

Commercial soap sold in stores is often made with chemical detergents e.g. sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), hardeners and synthetic lathering agents. Some of these ingredients can be drying or irritating on the skin.

Real handmade soap contains raw botanical ingredients that includes oil, butter, liquid and lye. Most mass-produced “soap” bars that you buy from the drug store or supermarket contain ingredients not recognized as real soap by the FDA. And this is with good reason!
