What is Handmade Cold Process Soap?

Wondering what is a cold process soap?

There are generally three methods of making soap, cold process, hot process, or using melt and pour soap bases.

Cold process soap making, often referred to as cold process for short or simply “CP”, is a method of soap making that uses a combination of oil and lye to make soap without additional or external heat sources.

In cold process soap making, a soap maker intentionally lowers the temperature of the caustic solution so that the saponification process/reaction rate is lowered allowing cold process soap makers to create swirls and other patterns, without the fear of rapid saponification or solidification due to temperature cooling.

Benefits of Cold Process Soap

Retail-bought ‘soap’ (normally known as cleanser or beauty bar) is made from a cocktail of chemicals and harsh detergents that could leave your skin irritated, overly cleansed, and dry.

If you take a minute to read the fine prints at the back of the product or the packaging box, you would probably be astonished at how many chemicals are used. Some chemicals could even cause cancer, such as triclosan.

Natural handmade cold process soap, on the other hand, is made using natural ingredients e.g. plant-based oils, essential oils, and organic clay.

Using a soap-making method known as the cold process or cold saponification, fixed oils are mixed with an alkali (also known as lye) to produce soap.

We will list down some of the benefits of buying and using a handmade cold process soap.

Using Natural Ingredients

Handmade cold process soaps are made using natural ingredients like fixed oils (e.g. coconut oil, olive oil, and palm oil), natural butter (e.g. shea butter, cocoa butter), pure essential oils, natural clays, or powder, and more.

Thru a soap-making process called saponification, lye is introduced to the fixed oils and butter to make soap. During saponification, soap and glycerin (a natural humectant that moisturizes the skin) are produced.

Once the saponification procedure is completed, lye is fully consumed to produce soap and there is no residual lye left in the soap.

Good for the Skin

Free from harsh chemicals and detergents that strip your skin, a handmade cold process soap is better for your skin.

Due to a super fat commonly found in a handmade soap recipe, a bar of cold process handmade soap would also contain residual nourishing oils (that was not converted to soap) for moisturizing the skin to help relieve irritated skin, dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, and other skin problems.

Handmade soap is often crafted by soap artisans in small batches and not tested on animals. The soap-making ingredients are also often sourced from reputable suppliers that support sustainability and no animal testing. You can also find vegan soap that does not contain animal products e.g. tallow.

Support Local Business

By purchasing your soap from a local crafter or business, you motivate the soap maker toward their passion, boost a local crafting market and in turn supporting the local business community.

By buying local, it would also benefit a whole string of associated local businesses e.g. ingredient suppliers, label printers, packaging suppliers, bottling suppliers, logistic delivery providers, and many more.

By supporting your local community, it provides more local employment opportunities. While invisible to you, these cause a ripple effect of benefits that could in turn circulate back to you or your own current employer, thus providing you with continued employment in a circular loop.

Reduced Carbon Footprint

With climate change and global warming causing a whole host of environmental issues, we need to reduce our carbon footprint.

Unlike imported soap, which has to be transported here by plane or ship, a locally produced soap travels a far shorter distance to get to you, which means that it has a much smaller carbon footprint.

While it may seem like a small lifestyle change, picking local produce can play a big part in saving our planet.

By purchasing a locally made handmade soap, you can play a big part in saving our planet and reducing your carbon footprint at the same time.

Where to Buy Handmade Cold Process Soap

Commercial soap sold in stores is often made with chemical detergents e.g. sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), hardeners, and synthetic lathering agents. Some of these ingredients can be drying or irritating on the skin.

On the other hand, handmade cold process soap contains natural botanical ingredients e.g. plant-based oil, butter, and natural organic additives.

By buying a locally made handmade cold process soap, you are assured of the quality, support a local business and reduce your carbon footprint.
