What is Natural Soap
Unlike commercial store bought shower gel or body wash which are mass produced with chemical detergents e.g. SLS, SLES and petroleum based products, handmade natural soaps are made in small batches with care and passion by a soap maker using quality plant based oils, organic ingredients and scents e.g. pure essential oils.
What is Natural Soap Made Of
True soap, or genuine soap, is defined as soap made by combining fats or oils with an alkali, such as lye. It can be made thru cold or hot processing and cured for 4-6 weeks. If there isn’t any lye, there isn’t any soap.
It is the reaction between the lye and the oils that produces soap. Once that reaction (called saponification) is complete, all of the lye is converted into soap; there is no lye remaining in the finished soap bar.
Handcrafted soapmakers formulates their soaps using different types of basic and specialty oils to make their unique “perfect bar.” Any skin or hair cleansing product made without lye (i.e sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide) is not soap, it is a detergent based cleanser.
Benefits of Using Natural Soap
Natural handmade soaps are gentle, biodegradable and conditioning to your skin. It would generally not dry out your skin (depending on your skin type) or cause skin irritation as the ingredients used in making the soap are gentle and skin safe e.g. plant-derived base oils, glycerin, and essential oils.
The natural ingredients found in natural soaps help to moisturize and cleanse your skin naturally. On the other hand, commercial store-bought “soaps” are made from synthetic detergents e.g. sodium laureth sulphate, sodium lauryl sulphate and other ingredients that may dehydrate, cause aging or potentially trigger allergic reactions.

Commonly Asked Soap Making Questions
What is the function of sodium hydroxide in soap making?
Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye, is required in soap making for the process of saponification. Saponification is the formation of soap from vegetable oils and/or animal fats which are fatty esters in the form of triglycerides. The alkali (lye) breaks the ester bond and releases the fatty acid salt ie soap and glycerol which are each soluble in aqueous solutions. Without lye, you simply can’t have saponification.
Is there any substitute for sodium hydroxide in soap making?
Sodium hydroxide is required for the process of saponification i.e. to convert oils and fats into soap. Without lye, you simply can’t have saponification. If you are not looking to make soap from scratch, you can always consider using melt and pour soap bases which are pre-made soap bases. With soap bases, you do not have to handle lye.
Where can I buy sodium hydroxide for soap making?
No. Lye is a controlled chemical under EPMA in Singapore. Forget about searching for where to buy lye in Singapore. You will not be able to find or buy lye in any stores in Singapore. You can only purchase lye from a soap making shop like Singapore Soap and use it in our soap making room.
What chemicals are used in soap making?
In lye based soap making, soap makers generally only uses two chemicals; sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide for bar soap and potassium hydroxide for liquid soap. Having said that, the end product soap does not contains these chemicals. Soap makers would normally incorporate a lye discount in their soap recipe and the lye introduced upfront are fully used up in the saponification process to form soap.
