Camphor essential oil is extracted from camphor trees that are more than 50 years in age. This tree is found mainly in tropical regions of Asia and in different parts of South America. The camphor oil is extracted using the steam distillation method of extraction from the woods and roots of the camphor tree. Cool to the touch, camphor essential oil has an intense, penetrating odor. When applied topically, camphor oil has a numbing quality and is easily absorbed by muscle tissue.

Growing up to 35 feet tall, the camphor tree is native to Japan, Taiwan and China. It takes 50 years before a camphor tree produces oil for extraction. Steam extracted, camphor oil becomes present in every part of the tree. Once used as a remedy against the plague in Persia, camphor essential oil has also been used in Iran for embalming purposes. Today, using advanced distillation techniques, three different types of camphor essential oil are produced- white, yellow, and brown. The yellow and the brown camphor oil contain a toxic substance called safrole and hence only white camphor is used for medicinal and aromatic purpose.
