True cedarwood Essential Oil (Cedarwood Atlas) is derived from the Cedrus Atlantica which is from the Pinaceae plant family while other commercial cedarwood oils like Cedarwood Virginia (a.k.a Red Cedar) and Cedarwood Cupressus (Chinese Weeping Cypress) are obtained from species of the Cupressaceae. Cedarwood is known for use in problem skin, as an insect repellent, and as an inhalent in respiratory complaints. It’s actions are sedative, astringent, and antiseptic. Some believe that It may be used to treat oily skin and scalp, relieve itching, and more serious skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema but always remember that high concentrations of essential oil can irritate the skin.
