Lemon eucalyptus essential oil (sometimes simply called Lemon eucalyptus oil) is made by steam distilling the dried leaves and twigs of the lemon eucalyptus tree (Eucalyptus citriodora or Corymbia citriodora). The lemon eucalyptus tree is a tall tree, growing to 35 metres (115 ft) in height (but sometimes taller), from temperate and tropical north eastern Australia. It is also known as lemon-scented gum, blue spotted gum, lemon eucalyptus and eucalyptus citriodora. In sub-Sahara Africa, it was found that burning the leaves of the lemon-scented gum eucalyptus tree (alongside with the use of mosquito nets) was a cost-effective means of household protection against mosquitoes. It is also widely known as a safe and natural alternative as compared to DEET found in commercial mosquitoes repellents.
