Basil Essential Oil (also known as Oil of Basil or Sweet Basil Oil) are the essence extracted from the Ocimum Basilicum plant. Not only is basil used widely in fine cuisine for its flavor enhancing ability, it is also thought to help heal various wounds and infections, and as a calming agent to combat inflammation, reduce adrenal fatigue, and treat nerve and muscle conditions [1]. Pure oil of basil are steam-distilled from fresh basil leaves to form an extract that contains high levels of antioxidants and other beneficial phytochemicals. It’s naturally sweet, warm, spicy and herbal aroma may aid restoration of mental alertness and sharpen sense of smell.

Widely used in traditional Indian medicine, basil’s name is derived from “basileum”, the Greek name for king. It was said that in the 16th century, powdered basil leaves were inhaled to treat migraines and chest infections while italian women wore basil to attract possible suitor. Regarded for it’s herbal potential, it was listed in Hildegard’s Medicine, a compilation of early German medicines, by the highly regarded Benedictine herbalist Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) [2]. Today, the uses of basil are researched extensively and looked towards as a potent traditional medicinal plant for headaches, coughs, diarrhea, constipation, warts, worms, and kidney malfunctions [3].
